Make your own mash tun

Step by step guide

You will need

a hacksaw

tubing cutter (optional)

about 8 feet of 1/2 inch CPVC pipe

about 3 feet of 3/8 inch vinyl tubing

(7) 1/2 inch CPVC Ell (90°) fittings

(4) 1/2 inch CPVC Tee fittings

(1) 3/8 Barb to 1/2” MIP fittting

(1)  1/2” slip to 1/2 thread coupler

(1) picnic cooler (at least 24 quart) with a drain plug.  The tighter the fit between the vinyl tubing and the drain, the better.  If it is loose, you will need to seal it with silicone.  I found tubing that I had to heat up in hot water and pull through the hole with pliers.  This tubing required NO silicone sealant and it did not leak.

Measure the interior bottom dimensions of the cooler.

The pick up tube should be about

2/3 the width and 2/3 the length

of the bottom dimensions.

Cut and mark two lengths of pipe, taking into account the  added length of the fittings.

Assemble as shown.  Use NO GLUE.

Cut six more short pieces as shown and assemble.

Use a hacksaw or Dremel tool to cut narrow slots about 1/3 through the pipe.

Make the slots every 1-2 inches  (2.5-5 cm) along the entire assembly.

You may need to cut a short piece to complete the barb fitting.

Pull the hose through the drain and attach to the barb fitting.

Hopefully the tubing is tight enough to not require silione sealer.  Seal if needed.

Drill 1/16 inch holes every 2 inches along the rinse pipe.  (the ones shown in the photo are actually too large)

Build another pipe assembly which will be the rinse shower.

Build another pipe assembly which will be the rinse shower.

Drill hole (approx. 7/8 inch)  in the cooler so the rinse pipe will sit level inside.

Since this example is 12 inches square, we will make the pick up tube about 8-9 inches square.
