Things I recommend
Dummies Book
Good book that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I like that.
Serious Book
If you get serious about brewing, this book can’t be beat for its comprehensive coverage of creating great beer.
Quality cooker
Higher power burner and stainless steel kettle. Nice.
Economy cooker
Inexpensive standard propane cooker. Aluminum kettle, average burner power.
Small cooler
Beware of coolers without drain plugs. They are much harder to steep grains in. This one would be fine for 5 gallon batches.
Larger cooler
The Ice Cube 70 is a great size and shape. Outstanding size for 10 gallon batches.
Digital scale
A good digital scale is indispensable for weighing hops and grains. I use mine for all kind of cooking and baking.
Brewery supplies
This is a good collection of tools and an extract red ale kit: a capper, carboy, book, brushes, etc.
Glass Carboy
Don’t bother with plastic buckets. They never last more than 1 year. Shipping kills the price of these online. See if you can find them in your local market.
Digital timer/ themometer
I use this all the time. I use the themometer to check water temperatures and set the timer for hop additions/ boil time/ mash time.
Digital themometer
Sometimes it is nice to just have a thermometer without a timer attached. I see this one is waterproof in case one accidentally drops it in the water... not that I would know about that or anything.
Siphon starter
I use this EVERY TIME I transfer beer from one vessel to another. Indispensable.
(And more sanitary than starting a siphon with your mouth)
Tap a draft
If you don’t have an extra refrigerator for a complete CO2 draft system, this is a good alternative: three 1.6 gallon bottles. Will not carbonate as quickly as a draft system, but takes up a lot less space.
Dispensing kit
With this kit, you could avoid the cost of a CO2 tank, carbonate the beer with sugar and still have great beer on tap without the hassle of bottling. Great introduction to draft beers and nothing is lost if you decide to get a CO2 tank/ regulator later.
Extra powerful cooker
10” x 10” burner... super fast but difficult to control at low temperatures. Would be great to bring water up to temperature quickly.
Better Digital scale
This scale has an especially nice feature: a pull out screen so your grain bucket can’t obscure the weight.
